Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in London on August 15, 1875 to African and English parents. He studied composition (with Charles Villiers Stanford) and violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music. After completing his studies in 1897, he held a variety of posts as a conductor and teacher, while pursuing a career as a composer.
